Cozumel, Q.R. — An estimated 500 sea turtle nests have been identified and marked along the island’s coast, keeping both environmental officials and volunteers busy.

Deputy Director of Ecology, Sandra Dutton Ruíz, says that they have made tours of the coasts and have located 500 nests. To date, those nests consist of 266 green turtle nests and 234 loggerhead nests.

She says that monitoring has been increased to ensure a higher survival rate of the hatchlings.

“The monitoring and surveillance is a fundamental tool to safeguard the species that, year after year, arrive at the littoral of the eastern part of the island,” she added. Sea turtle season on the island runs from May to September. Read more>>>
