If you’ve ever imagined yourself lazing on a tropical island, cold
drink in hand, and wriggling your toes in the warm, clear aquamarine
waters of the Caribbean Sea, the island of Cozumel in Mexico could be

Just 12 miles off the coast of Playa del Carmen, along Mexico’s
famed Riviera Maya, Cozumel is a well-established, world class vacation
destination. Especially known for its warm, tropical water, snorkelers
and scuba divers from across the globe enjoy exploring the island’s
reef, teeming with aquatic life.
Average temperatures in the 80s F make for comfortable weather with
breezes off the Caribbean providing some cool air during the hottest
months—when temperatures can climb into the 90s F.
At 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, Cozumel is just the right size to
get around on a bicycle or motor scooter, but taxis are abundant too.
The island’s largest town is San Miguel. With some 100,000 permanent
residents, San Miguel is a lively tourist town. With hundreds of small
gift stores, restaurants, night clubs, and bars attending to millions of
tourists each year, San Miguel serves its purpose flawlessly.
Tourism provides the high-octane fuel for the island’s economic
engine. The bustling port in San Miguel accommodates between 4 to 5
million cruise ship passengers annually. Huge ships arrive each week
(more during winter than summer), dropping their passengers into the
central area of San Miguel, staying just long enough for passengers to
enjoy the day, take an excursion, and rack up a few charges on their
credit cards.
Cozumel also has a busy international airport and a regular ferry
service from the mainland in Playa del Carmen. A small fleet of modern,
fast catamaran shuttles charge $20 for a roundtrip ticket and the ride

State of Quintana Roo Prepares Detailed Plans to Aggressively Address Sargasso Issues

Seeking to secure funding for mass-scale efforts to address it sargassum situation — an overabundance of the marine algae, which continues to plague Mexican Caribbean beaches on an unprecedented scale — Quintana’s Roo’s government has now declared a state of emergency, describing the unwelcome phenomenon as an “imminent natural disaster,” according to Mexico News Daily. The declaration applies to the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres, Benito Juárez, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel, Solidaridad, Tulum, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar and Othón P. Blanco.
The overwhelming volume of this species of seaweed that has been washing up on Mexican-Caribbean beaches over the past few months is not only damaging delicate coastal ecosystems by lowering marine oxygen levels and entangling native wildlife; but also causing huge losses for the area’s tourism industry, owing to the slimy mess and malignant odor it causes after washing up onshore. Quintana Roo’s Environment Secretary, Alfredo Arellano Guillermo, alluded to this dual threat in his statement, saying that, “The arrival and decomposition of large quantities of sargassum should be addressed with a double perspective: of guaranteeing the protection and use of the natural environment, and consequently, guaranteeing the normal development of human health.”
Governor Carlos Joaquín González said the state hopes to receive 600 million pesos ($31 million U.S.) to fund the emergency actions. The funds could come from local, state, and federal governments; as well as the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank. Read more>>>

This cultural extravaganza celebrates the beauty and culture of Isla Mujeres by showcasing the achievements, traditions and environmental splendor of the island. Isla Mujeres is the home to the largest aggregation of Whale Sharks in the world with thousands of people visiting to swim with the Whale Sharks each season.

Cozumel, Q.R. — An estimated 500 sea turtle nests have been
identified and marked along the island’s coast, keeping both
environmental officials and volunteers busy.
Deputy Director of Ecology, Sandra Dutton Ruíz, says that they have
made tours of the coasts and have located 500 nests. To date, those
nests consist of 266 green turtle nests and 234 loggerhead nests.
She says that monitoring has been increased to ensure a higher survival rate of the hatchlings.
“The monitoring and surveillance is a fundamental tool to safeguard
the species that, year after year, arrive at the littoral of the eastern
part of the island,” she added. Sea turtle season on the island runs
